Agriculture Drones

Transforming Farming from the Sky

The agricultural sector across Europe is rapidly evolving, and drones are at the heart of this transformation. Known for their precision, efficiency, and sustainability, agricultural drones are becoming an essential tool for modern farmers, agronomists, and agri-tech companies.

At Europe Drone, we support drone manufacturers, service providers, and agribusinesses by helping them navigate the complex regulatory environment, connect with trusted partners, and adopt drone solutions that deliver real impact in the field.

What Are Agriculture Drones?

Agriculture drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) specifically designed to perform tasks such as:

  • Aerial Mapping & Surveying: Using RGB or multispectral cameras to analyze field conditions, identify crop stress, and create detailed field maps.
  • Spot Spraying & Seeding: Applying fertilizers, pesticides, or seeds precisely where needed, reducing waste and protecting the environment.
  • Crop Monitoring: Assessing plant health over time using NDVI or other vegetation indices.
  • Livestock Tracking & Farm Security: Monitoring herds and property remotely.

These capabilities enable better decision-making, lower input costs, and increase yields—making drones a key part of the European Union’s vision for sustainable agriculture.

Use Cases Across Europe

Across Europe, drone technology is already being adopted in:

  • Precision farming
  • Olive grove management
  • Vineyard monitoring /spraying (is allowed in some EU countries)
  • Grain crop spraying
  • Field surveying

Each country has specific challenges, from fragmented farmland to strict chemical regulations, but drones offer scalable solutions.

Regulatory Requirements in the EU

To legally operate drones for agricultural purposes in Europe, pilots must comply with EU Regulation 2019/947, overseen by EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency). These operations typically fall under the Open or Specific categories.

Required Drone Licenses and Categories:

A1/A3 Certificate (Open Category)

  • For low-risk operations
  • Suitable for small mapping drones under 250g
  • Online training and exam

A2 Certificate (Open Category)

  • For operations near people and buildings
  • Needed for drones up to 2kg (e.g., for crop scouting)
  • Requires theory test and self-practical training

Specific Category (PDRA-S01 or custom SORA)

  • Required for spraying drones and heavier UAVs
  • Involves risk assessment (SORA), operational authorization, and sometimes a Light UAS Operator Certificate (LUC)
  • Typically applies to drones over 25kg or for flights outside of visual line of sight (BVLOS)

At Europe Drone, we assist our clients in understanding and obtaining the right licenses, writing SORA applications, and coordinating with national aviation authorities.
